2001 Input-Output Tables for Catalonia

07.10.2007

The input-output framework is a system of macroeconomic information that improves knowledge about the Catalan economy, as it precisely explains the economic relations amongst the activity branches and their main economic operations (production, intermediate consumption, end consumption, investment, exports, etc.).

Below are the fundamental features of the input-output project, broken down into the following areas: phases of the project, methodology and presentation of results.

Phases of the project

The phases of disseminating the results of the 2001 Input-Output Tables for Catalonia project (TIOC-2001) were the following:

Methodology

The methodology of the input-output tables is contained in the text of the publication Taules Input-Output de Catalunya 2001 in PDF. The first chapter presents a summary of the input-output framework, including definitions of the variables used in the project. The detailed information on the methodology of the input-output table framework is available in the European regulation approving the European System of Accounts. The second chapter contains a methodological explanation of the process of generating the TIOC, including the fieldwork, statistical sources and the estimation process of the main variables.

The sectorisation of the tables is presented in this publication in two sections. The second chapter outlines the basic criteria used in the break-down and compares the details of the sectorisation of the TIOC with the previous tables for Catalonia (1987 and 1967) and with the table for Spain. Appendix A shows the correspondence of the sectorisation of the TIOC 14, 65, and 122. Also available in the section called Tables is the Excel document Sectorisation of the Input-Output Tables for Catalonia, which presents equivalent information on the sectorisation of the TIOC.

Simultaneous to the development of the 2001 TIOC project, Idescat also developed a series of feasibility studies on satellite accounting with different university teams. The statistical legislation currently in effect has included some of these satellite accounts in official statistics, and several accounts are slated to be developed, such as the accounts on tourism, housing and the environment (air).

Presentation of the results

The results of the input-output tables includes the simplified economic accounts and the tables for 14, 65 and 122 activity branches. They can be seen in a variety of options:

  • a PDF publication
  • the Excel documents that are attached in the Tables section
  • a book which includes a CD with all the results

The simplified economic accounts for the Catalan economy provide an integrated synthesis of the economic activities in a given territory. They are calculated based on the information gathered in the Input-Output Tables. The results of the production and exploitation accounts (GDP and Gross Exploitation Surplus, respectively) are very important in terms of macroeconomics.

The design of the Excel tables presented is equivalent for the triple sectorisation chosen (to 14, 65 and 122 products/branches). Each file includes the Expanded Destination Table (abbreviated TDA), the matrix of technical coefficients, the Leontieff inverse matrix and other supplementary information (resources, uses and income of the economy, employment, productivity and multipliers).
