The main goal of this operation is to produce statistical information on the main characteristics of libraries, including:
These statistics have been performed in accordance with a collaboration agreement signed between the National Statistical Institute INE and Idescat, and in conjunction with the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The statistics on libraries have been undertaken every two years since 1986. The information on libraries has been obtained following the definitions contained in ISO (International Organization for Standardization) norm 2789, which as of 2000 modified the recommended definitions used by UNESCO, approved at its General Assembly in November 1970.
