Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Population

07.26.2007

The main goals of the Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Population are to analyse the living conditions and habits of the population, identifying the territorial differences within Catalonia; to assess the evolutionary trends in ways of life and social phenomena; to study the factors that play a role in social changes; and to differentiate the existent social groups and their characteristics.

The Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Population 2006 is the fifth edition of a survey administered every five years. In previous editions, it was conducted by the Metropolitan Corporation of Barcelona (which is now the Institute of Regional and Metropolitan Studies of Barcelona), the Association of Municipalities of Barcelona and the Barcelona Provincial Council.

For the first time, Idescat is also in charge of the present survey through a cooperation agreement. This leads the survey results to be regarded official statistics, with the technical conditions that this entails and the extension of the geographical area to Catalonia as a whole. The inclusion of the Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Population 2006 in the Statistical Plan of Catalonia means that within Catalan social statistics there will now be certain data available that until now were not obtained transversally through official statistics.

The results are classified into the following subjects:

  • Basic socio-demographic data on the population
  • Geographical provenance
  • Residential mobility throughout the population's lifespan
  • Structure of the household where the population lives
  • Job or activity
  • Health and dependency in adverse circumstances
  • Income and economic conditions of the population
  • Characteristics of the housing where the population lives
  • Education and cultural and free-time habits
  • Personal relationships, membership in clubs and future expectations
  • Perception of the territory
  • Everyday mobility

This publication can be downloaded in PDF format. It is also available as a book. The same information is also available in the Bank of statistics on municipalities and counties.

The Institute of Regional and Metropolitan Studies of Barcelona, the Association of Municipalities and the Barcelona Provincial Council have created a dedicated website to disseminate the results of the Survey on Living Conditions and Habits of the Population for other territorial areas.
