Statistics on personal income distribution and the risk of poverty

03.27.2008

The Survey on Living Conditions is an annual survey conducted by the INE since 2004 with a two-fold purpose:

  • to provide information on personal income distribution through net annual income
  • to measure the incidence and composition of poverty by setting up an at-risk-of-poverty threshold

The information on personal income distribution examines into the more socio-demographic aspects of this distribution, taking into account annual income per household, person and equivalised household size, as well as the economic situations in households according to the social benefits they receive and their difficulty paying monthly bills. What is more, a series of synthetic indexes are presented, including the Gini index and the S80/20 and S90/10 share ratios analysing the inequality of income distribution.

With regard to measuring the population's risk of poverty, an at-risk-of-poverty threshold is presented for Catalonia. The population is classified according to this threshold, and the incidence, composition and intensity of poverty are studied with regard to this classification.

These statistics can be viewed in the Bank of Statistics on Municipalities and Counties, as well as a selection of results in the section Demographics and Quality of life, which for 2004 and 2005 are also available in the form of a statistical document.
